BONUS PATTERN: SNOWMAN HAT

An extra knitting pattern absolutely free!

The pattern below is to fit a child aged from 3 years upwards, depending on head size. (It will even fit some adults!)

 

For larger sizes I would recommend simply using larger needles.

Abbreviations:

 

b&t      bind and tie

dec       decrease

gs         garter stitch

inc        increase

k          knit

k2tog    knit two together

m1       make one stitch by picking up yarn from back of previous row

p          purl

p2tog    purl two together

rs         right side

sl          slip stitch from left hand needle to right

ss         stocking stitch

st         stitches

ws        wrong side

 

You will need 3.75, 4.5, and 6 mm needles. Colours: white, black, grey, orange, hat colour to taste. The white and the hat colour should be chunky yarn, all others medium.

 

 

Main piece

 

Use the 4.5 mm needles and begin at lower edge. Cast on 88 st in white and gs 5 rows.

 

Beginning with a p row, continue in ss and work 33 rows.

 

Row 39: (k 6, k2tog) 11 times – 77 st. P 1 row.

Row 41: (k 5, k2tog) 11 times – 66 st. P 1 row.

Row 43: (k 4, k2tog) 11 times – 55 st. P 1 row.

Row 45: (k 3, k2tog) 11 times – 44 st. P 1 row.

Row 47: (k 2, k2tog) 11 times – 33 st. P 1 row.

Row 49: (k 1, k2tog) 11 times – 22 st. P 1 row.

Row 51: k2tog 11 times – 11 st. B&t.

 

With ws out, join row ends together. Turn rs out.

 

 

Nose

 

Using the 3.75 mm needles, begin at lower edge and cast on 5 st in orange.

 

Row 1: inc k-wise into every st – 10 st. P 1 row.

Row 3: k 1, inc, k 6, inc, k 1 – 12 st. P 1 row.

Row 5: k 1, inc, k 8, inc, k 1 – 14 st. Ss 5 rows.

Row 11: k2tog, k 1, k2tog, k 1, k2tog, k 1, k2tog, k 1, k2tog – 9 st. P 1 row.

Row 13: k2tog twice, k 1, k2tog twice – 5 st. Cast off.

 

Lightly stuff and sew in place on front of hat as shown.

 

 

Eyes and mouth

 

Darn eyes in black and mouth in grey as shown. The mouth will require several overlapping stitches.

 

 

Hat

 

Yes, the hat is wearing a hat.

 

Using 6 mm needles and desired colour, begin at outer edge and cast on 132 st. K 1 row.

 

Row 2: (k 4, k2tog) 22 times – 110 st. K 1 row.

Row 4: (k 3, k2tog) 22 times – 88 st. P 1 row.

Beginning with a p row, ss 5 rows.

Row 11: (k 6, k2tog) 11 times – 77 st. P 1 row.

Row 13: (k 5, k2tog) 11 times – 66 st. P 1 row.

Row 15: (k 4, k2tog) 11 times – 55 st. P 1 row.

Row 17: (k 3, k2tog) 11 times – 44 st. P 1 row.

Row 19: (k 2, k2tog) 11 times – 33 st. P 1 row.

Row 21: (k 1, k2tog) 11 times – 22 st. P 1 row.

Row 23: k2tog 11 times – 11 st. B&t.

 

Note that p side is rs.

 

With ws out, join row ends together. Turn rs out and sew in place on top of the snowman’s head as shown.
